A new era!

Although some already know I am sure that there are a few people who have not yet heard the news! I have officially left Save On Foods, and I promise I will not be going back.... again.

I chose to make April's 15% Tuesday my last day, why I don't know since it is one of the most ridiculous days of the month, but I did.

It's been quite the 6(ish) years, and there have been some really awesome days as well as some really terrible days. I met some really great people through Save On, and some of them are now really amazing friends and there are some people that I would really rather not ever see again.

All in all working at Save On was a learning experience, I have learnt how I would like to treat people, and how I would like not to be treated. I have learnt that in business there will always be untruthful people, as well as people you can trust completely. However, the most important thing I have taken from this job is the knowledge that the general public will take service workers for granted. They treat us like a lesser human, like a slave and sometimes they wont even acknowledge you. I am not saying each and every person is that way, but the ones who are make this job much harder for the cashiers to do.

I'd like to lay out a couple of rants I have when it comes to being a cashier, and I am sure that everyone who has been a cashier (and still is one) can relate to this.

1. Despite what people seem to think, groceries do not bag themselves - we do.
2. I am a real person, and since you are standing in line with nothing else to do you can acknowledge me, since I took 3 seconds out of my day to have the common courtesy to do that to you. If for whatever reason you do find yourself on the phone or mid conversation with your comrade when you reach the cashier... excuse yourself smile at me, greet me or give me the finger I really don't care. Just don't treat me like a machine, it's offensive.
3. For those capable human beings who have the ability to take steps, lift bags and do work I don't think it would harm you to help me out a little bit when you see my struggling with YOUR GORCERIES. I would appreciate it much more then have you standing in front of me staring at me while I struggle.
4. If you do find me without a customer just standing around until the next person comes to the till, don't try to make the funny joke, "Oh, you were just waiting for me weren't you?" No, I actually wasn't! It turns out I do get paid regardless of wether or not I am helping a customer. So I was actually waiting for my shift to end, not for you.
5. Despite what you may think, I am a cashier and not a mathmetician. Please don't get snotty with me when I can't tell you all of the conversion rates. I do promise you that we are not ripping you off, and if you would like to do the math yourself on your own time, so be it.
6. Inflation is not something that I conjured up in my mind to try and ruin your day, or heaven forbid your life. Inflation is a fact of life, we all know what. A series of unfortunate events occur - ALL THE TIME - which causes prices to go up. I will never understand why you would blame me for something that I have no control over, and newsflash I work a medial job so it's effecting me too.

I believe that is all I have for now, followers I know you understand where I am coming from. Please feel free to share your stories if you have any, I would love to hear them.

Until next time, be well.

  1. I am soooo happy that you are quitting and NOT going back! It's about time : )

All of your points are so true. I tried to think of somemore points to add but I think you pretty much got it covered.

Altough when I was bald people seemed to feel the need to touch my head without asking. I can't tell you how much I enjoyed that.

  2. I especially enjoyed reading #4 :) LOL

Well written, and although I don't think I have ever been a bitch to a cashier, I'll always remember your post and the points you've made -- THANKS!

  3. Arianne: I can't really say much considering I really enjoyed touching your bald head. But day after day I can imagine it gets annoying!
Jakigh: I don't think you have it in you to be a bitch to a cashier (for no reason anyway!) I always found you were quite lovely to serve... When you came through my till anyway!
